Pupil and parental communication: extracurricular activities: addictive feeds

California schools cannot tie extracurricular access or all school communications to addictive social-media-style feeds beginning in 2027–28.

Pupils cannot be shut out of sports or clubs for not having or using algorithmically personalized feeds. Schools must also provide another way to reach pupils and parents or guardians.

What the law does

  • Bars school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools from excluding pupils from extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, because they do not have or use addictive feeds.
  • Prohibits those schools from using addictive feeds as their only means of contacting pupils or their parents or guardians.
  • Encourages schools to describe these rights in pupil handbooks or similar materials.

Who it affects

  • Public-school pupils seeking to participate in extracurricular activities.
  • Parents and guardians receiving school communications.
  • School districts, county offices of education, and charter schools.

Context

The requirements start with the 2027–28 school year and cover feeds that personalize recommended user media based on user or device information, subject to specified exceptions.
